Hair Gloss Treatments Are Replacing Toner as the Go-To Color Refresh

Toner has long been the standard maintenance appointment between full color services, primarily used to neutralize unwanted brassiness in blonde and lightened hair. Gloss treatments are increasingly taking over that maintenance slot, offering a similar color-refreshing effect with added shine and a noticeably longer window before fading.
The formulation difference matters here: gloss treatments coat the hair shaft with a semi-permanent pigment and conditioning layer, rather than just depositing toner's typically thinner, faster-fading pigment. That coating is what produces the shine gloss is named for, while also extending how long the color-correcting effect lasts.
Stylists note the appeal isn't limited to blonde clients correcting brassiness — brunette and red-toned clients are booking gloss appointments purely for the shine and subtle color depth, a use case toner was never really marketed for.
As a maintenance appointment, gloss is edging toward becoming the default rather than the upgrade, particularly among clients who found toner's shine-free color correction only solved half the problem they were booking for.
