NYFW Spring 2027 Hair: Crimps Return and Loose Knots Replace the Slick Bun

Crimped hair was the standout of New York Fashion Week's spring/summer 2027 shows, according to Who What Wear's backstage roundup. Y2K-inspired textures appeared across the week: creased looks at Christian Siriano, textured waves at Anna Sui and ribbon-like strands at Christian Cowan, where the lead hairstylist described the effect as nostalgic and rebellious, especially when paired with a loose, lived-in knot.
Loose, imperfect twists were the other big shape. Stylists used French rolls, low off-center knots and a single large combined curl, then pulled soft face-framing pieces from the twist or left natural flyaways in a slicked-back bun so the finish never looked too polished. Slipknots appeared as half-up, half-down loops, elongated knotted ponytails and low loose buns.
At Ulla Johnson, hairstylist Diego Da Silva, working with Wella Professionals, built the look around a texture adapted to each model's hair type, keeping a certain rawness while the overall finish stayed soft and effortless, according to Wella's recap posted September 17. The team used EIMI Sugar Lift for body and grip and EIMI Stay Firm for hold, which also protects against humidity and UV, useful for a runway set in an outdoor Gotham Park setting.
The overall message is that hair should be styled around the person rather than one look for everyone, a shift that favors textured, slightly undone styles over heat-pressed polish.
