The Compact Powder Renaissance Nobody Predicted

Pressed powder compacts spent years as the unglamorous, slightly outdated counterpart to loose setting powder and, more recently, setting sprays. Their current resurgence wasn't an obvious bet, but sales figures at several retailers suggest the format is genuinely back rather than just nostalgically referenced.

Part of the appeal is straightforwardly practical — a compact travels better than loose powder or a spray bottle, and a built-in mirror covers touch-ups without needing a separate one. But formulation has also improved meaningfully, with finer milling reducing the flashback and cakey finish that made pressed powder feel dated next to newer setting formats.

Some of the renewed interest is aesthetic nostalgia, tied to a broader wave of early-2000s and 2010s beauty references cycling back into relevance. But the format's practical advantages were real all along; they'd just been overshadowed by newer alternatives for a few years.

It's a useful case study in how a format doesn't need to reinvent itself to come back — sometimes it just needs the alternatives to reveal their own limitations first.
