Fragrance has traditionally been sold as a finished, singular product — one bottle, one scent, take it or leave it. A newer format gaining shelf space at makeup counters treats scent more like a customizable palette: small multi-bottle sets of complementary notes meant to be layered and mixed rather than worn individually.

The approach borrows directly from makeup's logic around personalization, where a palette gives a customer control over the final look rather than a single predetermined shade. Fragrance layering kits apply the same idea to scent, letting a customer combine a base note with a lighter top note depending on the day or occasion.

It's also a lower-commitment way to try fragrance notes a customer might not choose as a full-size, standalone purchase, functioning similarly to how a palette lets someone experiment with an eyeshadow shade they wouldn't buy as a single pan.

The format is still a small share of overall fragrance sales, but its presence at makeup counters rather than dedicated perfume counters signals how directly the industries are borrowing from each other's playbooks.
