Fermentation breaks down plant extracts into smaller compounds, which several formulators argue improves both absorption and shelf stability without extra preservatives.
The category's breakout ingredients — fermented rice water, fermented soybean extract, and various yeast-derived filtrates — aren't new to skincare, but they're being marketed with far more transparency about what fermentation actually does chemically, rather than leaning on vague "ancient beauty secret" framing.
Dermatologists point out a real advantage for sensitive skin: fermentation tends to reduce the molecular weight of potential irritants, which can make a fermented version of an extract gentler than its raw counterpart, even at a higher concentration.
It's not a replacement for retinoids or exfoliating acids, but as a category built around barrier support and gentle repair, fermented skincare is one of the rare trends where the marketing and the mechanism are actually pointing the same direction.
