Cream Eyeshadow Sticks Are Outselling Palettes for the First Time

Eyeshadow palettes — ten, twelve, sometimes twenty pans of coordinated shades — have been the category's default format for so long that their recent sales decline relative to single-shade cream sticks counts as a genuine shift, not just seasonal noise.

The appeal of the stick format is speed and low commitment: a single swipe across the lid, blended with a finger, delivers a wash of color in a fraction of the time a multi-shade eye look takes to build from a palette. For a generation of consumers already gravitating toward simpler routines, that math is compelling.

Formulators note the shift has also pushed innovation into pigment load and crease-resistance for cream formulas, categories where sticks used to lag behind powder shadows. Newer cream sticks are matching powder's staying power without needing a primer underneath, closing the gap that used to justify keeping a palette around.

Palettes aren't disappearing from vanities, but they're increasingly the special-occasion option rather than the everyday default — a reversal of the format's role for most of the last twenty years.
