Bold Brows Are Back, and the Pencil Is Doing More Work Than the Gel

After several years of "your brows but better" softness — light gel, minimal filling, natural gaps left alone — thicker, more deliberately shaped brows are returning to runways and filtering into everyday makeup routines.

The shift changes which product in the brow step matters most. Soft, natural brows are largely a gel job, brushing existing hairs into place with minimal added color. Bolder, more defined shapes depend on the pencil doing structural work — filling in sparse areas and extending the tail — with gel playing a secondary, hold-only role.

That's pushed several brands to reformulate brow pencils with finer tips and firmer, more waxy textures capable of drawing individual hair-like strokes rather than the softer, powder-adjacent pencils suited to natural brow maintenance.

It's a reminder that brow trends move in a fairly reliable pendulum between natural and defined, and the product innovation tends to lag a season or two behind whichever direction the pendulum has just swung.
