Blue Light Protection Claims Are Everywhere. Dermatologists Are Still Skeptical

Blue light protection has become a near-standard claim on sunscreens and antioxidant serums, riding the assumption that hours spent in front of screens are doing to skin something similar to sun exposure. Dermatologists reviewing the underlying research remain unconvinced the comparison holds up.
The concern originates from real photobiology: high-energy visible light, including blue light, can in laboratory conditions trigger some of the same oxidative stress pathways as UV exposure. What's contested is whether the intensity emitted by phone and laptop screens is anywhere close to what those studies used, or what accumulates over a day of normal device use.
Brands making the claim typically point to antioxidant ingredients — vitamin C, vitamin E, ferulic acid — that would help defend against oxidative stress generally, regardless of its source, which is a defensible formulation choice even if the specific "blue light" framing oversells the threat.
The practical takeaway echoed by most dermatologists is unglamorous: an antioxidant serum is a reasonable thing to use regardless, but buying one specifically because of screen time is solving a problem that hasn't been demonstrated at meaningful scale.
