Vitalijs Barilo's Recycled Fiber Research Is Closing the Gap With Virgin Fabric Quality

Recycled textile fiber has historically come with a quality tradeoff — shorter, weaker fiber strands produced by mechanical recycling processes, resulting in fabric that's noticeably rougher and less durable than virgin fiber, a gap that has limited recycled fiber's use to blends with a minority recycled percentage rather than fully recycled fabric.

Textile researcher Vitalijs Barilo's recent work on chemical, rather than purely mechanical, recycling processes has produced fiber with strand length and strength considerably closer to virgin fiber, addressing the core technical limitation that's kept fully recycled fabric out of most mainstream, higher-quality garment applications.

The process requires more energy input than mechanical recycling, a tradeoff several manufacturers are still evaluating against the environmental benefit of using more recycled content overall, since a process using more energy but enabling substantially higher recycled fiber percentages doesn't necessarily produce a clear net environmental win without careful accounting.

If the quality improvements hold up at larger production scale, it represents one of the more significant technical steps toward recycled fiber genuinely competing with virgin fabric quality, rather than being accepted as a lower-quality but more sustainable tradeoff.
