JetBlue Wins Spirit's LaGuardia Landing Slots for $58.5 Million

JetBlue won an auction for a batch of takeoff and landing slots at LaGuardia Airport that had belonged to Spirit Airlines, paying $58.5 million for access to the tightly constrained New York airport following Spirit's collapse into bankruptcy and shutdown.
LaGuardia slots are among the most valuable in the country because the airport's runway capacity is federally limited, making new slots available only when an existing holder gives them up, whether through a deal or, as in this case, a bankruptcy liquidation.
The acquisition adds to JetBlue's broader push to absorb capacity and market share left behind by Spirit's exit, following the Justice Department's decision to block JetBlue's proposed merger with Spirit in 2024, a decision critics have since blamed in part for weakening Spirit's finances heading into its eventual bankruptcy.
Aviation analysts say the slot purchase gives JetBlue meaningfully expanded New York-area capacity without needing regulatory approval for a merger, a route the airline has increasingly favored after its acquisition attempt was blocked.
