JetBlue Expands Fort Lauderdale Operations, Hiring Former Spirit Employees

JetBlue has significantly expanded its presence at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, adding 11 new destinations and hiring former Spirit Airlines employees as it works to absorb the gap left by Spirit's shutdown. The airline expects to operate nearly 130 daily departures from the airport, more than 75% above its 2025 schedule and the largest operation in JetBlue's history at any single airport outside its New York hub.

In the immediate aftermath of Spirit's collapse, JetBlue offered $99 "rescue fares" to help strand Spirit customers rebook their travel, a move the airline framed as both a customer-service gesture and a chance to introduce budget-conscious travelers to its network.

The Fort Lauderdale buildout follows JetBlue's earlier purchase of Spirit's LaGuardia slots, forming a two-pronged strategy to capture displaced Spirit customers and route capacity across the carrier's two largest growth priorities on the East Coast.

Fort Lauderdale officials have welcomed the expansion, noting that Spirit's exit had raised concerns about reduced competition and higher fares at an airport that had built much of its identity around budget travel options.
