Amtrak Launches New Daily Service Between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara

Amtrak began operating a new daily train service connecting Los Angeles Union Station with the Santa Barbara Amtrak Station this spring, aimed at commuters and travelers looking for an alternative to the notoriously congested Highway 101 corridor along the Southern California coast.
The route runs every day of the year and is part of a broader push by Amtrak to expand shorter regional routes that connect mid-sized California cities more frequently, complementing the longer-distance Pacific Surfliner service that already runs along much of the same corridor.
The expansion comes alongside similar frequency increases on the East Coast, including additional daily round trips between Richmond and Washington, DC, and new service to cities including Roanoke, Norfolk, and Newport News in Virginia.
Transit advocates have pointed to the new California route as an example of Amtrak prioritizing practical, commuter-oriented service alongside its higher-profile Acela investments, arguing that frequent regional service tends to build ridership more reliably than infrequent long-distance routes.
